State Appeals Manslaughter Conviction of Cop Killer

The criminal department of the State Prosecutor's Office filed a petition, Thursday, of a decision by the Be'er Sheva District Court to find Negev Bedouin Ibrahim Tamtawi guilty of manslaughter instead of murder in the death of police sergeant major Yigal Cohen in 2008. Tamtawi was originally charged with murder, theft and vandalizing an electric facility. He was sentenced to 14 years in prison.

While staffing a speed trap, Cohen signaled Tamtawi's car to stop, but the car kept going, striking Cohen, according to the indictment, which added that Cohen landed on the windshield and Tamtawi sped on, zigzagging in an effort to dislodge Cohen until Tamtai lost control, striking a traffic sign before the car fell in a ditch.
