Education Minister Gideon Sa'ar said Monday that he had ordered the closure of schools where only students from Ethiopian immigrant families studied. Students from immigrant families were to be integrated in other schools, and no separate schools would be tolerated, Sa'ar said.
Sa'ar said that over the past few years several schools had come to the point where nearly all the students studying there were of Ethiopian descent. He said he ordered Ministry officials several weeks ago to track down the schools and close them down, distributing the students in other schools in the community. “As a Zionist, I believe wholeheartedly in the ingathering of the exiles, and I also believe in equality. As one who was very active in helping Ethiopians reach Israel, I cannot allow this kind of absorption to take place,” Sa'ar said of the separate schools.
