Egyptian security forces have deployed along the length of the Suez Canal to prevent a terror attack. The principle threat comes from Sinai terrorists associated with the Al-Qaeda international terror organization. The troop buildup is especially noticeable near the Al-Qantara crossing and the Peace Bridge next to Ismailiya, and impromptu roadblocks have been put up on highways leading to the canal.
A sophisticated camera network is following ship traffic in the canal and canal employees have been instructed to be vigilant about unusual traffic by people, land vehicles or boats. On Wednesday, 60 ships carried 2.2 million tons of cargo through the waterway.
