Abbas: Keep Things Quiet Ahead of September

Chairman Mahmoud Abbas of the Palestinian Authority (PA) instructed the heads of the defense establishment in Judea and Samaria to preserve the relative calm in the PA-assigned area so as not to torpedo the PA's planned attempt at recognition by the United Nations as a sovereign state next month, according to the PA's WAFA news agency. The order came against the backdrop of fighting generated by last Thursday's terror attacks on southern Israel.

During a Sunday meeting with the security chies, Abu-Mazen blamed Israeli policy for the deadlock in talks between the two sides. He added, "What Israel is doing now won't deter our people from continuing to press for its rights."
