A new Torah scroll was recently put into service in the Me'arat Hamachpelah Cave of the Patriarchs in Hevron. The scroll was donated by Yisrael Bareli (Barelishvili), the president of former Georgian Jews in Moscow and his family, in memory of his grandfather.
Organizers say hundreds of former Georgian Jews made the trip from Moscow and the Israeli cities of Lod and Ashdod, led by their chief rabbis. Among local dignitaries were Member of Knesset Avraham Michaeli (Shas), Deputy Police Chief Yisrael Yitzchak and area military and police commanders. The final words of the scroll were inscribed in the Avraham Avinu neighborhood before the procession to its new home, accompanied by the guests and a group of hassidic musicians.
