Israeli author Yoram Kaniuk said to a crowd of doctors and medical staff outside Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv that “the name of the government should be blotted out.” Kaniuk was speaking at a rally being held by doctors demanding higher wages and better work schedules, as part of their sanctions against a proposed contract that the Treasury and Histadrut are close to accepting.
Kaniuk was speaking as a respresentative of patients, having recently undergone treatment. “You are wonderful people and you deserve everything,” he told the crowd. “This hospital not only saved my life but showed me a humanitarian side of Israelis. May the name of this government be blotted out.” Kaniuk, known for his fiercely anti-religious views, used the Hebrew expression “yimach shemo,” usually reserved for the worst enemies of the Jews.
