Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai issued a statement Sunday that he supports the goals of protesters in the tent city set up over the weekend on Rothschild Boulevard in the center of the city, who are demanding more affordable housing prices. However, he said, his office was not the address to seek relief. “This is a national issue,” he said in the statement. “The government is responsible because it does not free up land for development and does not properly support public transportation.”
Huldai added that Tel Aviv was not the problem. “Real estate prices all around Israel are frightening. I am not responsible for them – this is a natural result of the marketplace. Tel Aviv is always a target of protesters because it is in the center of the country, and everyone wants to live here,” he said.
