Rice: Syria Sanctions Unlikely

U.S. Ambassador to the UN, Susan Rice, said on Wednesday the UN Security Council is not likely to agree to slap sanctions or other punitive measures against Syria for its secret nuclear program because of members such as Russia and China which have veto power.

“Several members of the council ... are unlikely to be prepared to support a council product at this time,” Rice told journalists.

Diplomats will meet behind closed doors in New York on Thursday and hear a briefing from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Syrian efforts to stonewall an investigation into its alleged nuclear complex at Deir A-Zor.
