PM Opposes Judge Selection Bill

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's staffers announced Wednesday that the prime minister is “unequivocally opposed” to a bill that would require Supreme Court candidates to be approved by the Knesset Constitution Committee. The law was proposed by MKs Yariv Levine and Zev Elkin, who expressed hope that it would provide valuable external oversight of the Judges Selection Committee.

Opposition leader Tzipi Livni criticized Netanyahu in a Knesset session earlier in the day, saying, “You want to destroy the Supreme Court.” Netanyahu did not reveal his position regarding the bill at the time.
