Protesters who support Syrian President Bashar Assad stormed the Turkish embassy in Damascus and tried to remove the Turkish flag which hangs over it, the Turkish Zaman newspaper reported Monday.

According to the report, the incident occurred on Sunday when about 2,000 demonstrators gathered in front of Turkey’s embassy in Damascus, chanting slogans against Turkey and trying to remove the flag of Turkey which hangs over the building. The report noted that the embassy’s security personnel, along with Syrian security forces, dispersed the rioters.

The newspaper noted that Syria’s deputy foreign minister later called Turkey’s ambassador to Syria to apologize for the incident.
