The European Union on Monday called on Israel and the PA to sign a “framework agreement” for negotiations that would take place before September, and asked both sides to “avoid taking unilateral steps.” In a statement, EU foreign ministers, concluding a meeting in Brussels, said that efforts should be made to ensure that Jerusalem became a joint capital, for Israel and a PA state. The ministers also announced that another fundraising round would be held for the PA next month.
The ministers also congratulated Hamas and Fatah for their reconciliation agreement, and said that they hoped that the deal would persuade Hamas to stop shelling Israel from Gaza. They also called for a permanent end to the rocket attacks on Israel, and for the release of kidnapped IDF soldier Gilad Shalit.
