The Grimsvotn volcano, Iceland's most active volcano, erupted over the weekend, in what scientists called a “large” eruption. However, unlike the last time a large volcano in Iceland erupted, scientists said they did not expect this one to cause problems for air travelers. "It can be a big eruption, but it is unlikely to be like last year,” an Icelandic geology official told reporters over the weekend.

Last year, the Eyjafjallajokul eruption cancelled hundreds of flights throughout Europe for a period of weeks, and kept nearly 10 million passengers grounded for nearly a week as officials scrambled to find alternative air routes. Iceland on Sunday morning closed its airspace due to the eruption.
