Bill: No Funding for Draft-Dodging Artists

On Sunday, the Ministerial Committee for Legislation will consider a bill to ban state funding for artistic and sports events with participants who are avoiding military or volunteer service. The bill is being introduced against the background of worrisome statistics on draft evasion published from time to time by the Personnel Branch of the Israel Defense Forces. It notes the role model status of performers and athletes and says its absurd for the state to be paying people who are not carrying their share of the defense or volunteer load.

The bill's sponsor, Member of Knesset Moshe Matalon, says he is not pointing a finger at the artists, but at the state. He says the bill is designed to send a message that supporting artists and supporting the state go hand in hand, and that performers should not be rewarded or praised for avoiding service.
