General Muhamad Frichat, who heads the operations branch of the Jordanian army, met with Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Gaza Thursday.
Interviewed by the Jordanian newspaper Al-Dustar Haniyeh expressed hope that Jordan would tighten its ties with Hamas and rejected the notion of Jordan as an alternative to an Arab state within the borders of Israel. He specificly called on Jordan to take a more active role in protecting Muslim holy sites and the Arab population of Jerusalem.
