Greenpeace: Leviathan Could Help the Environment

After the announcement Wednesday that the Leviathan gas field off the Haifa coast contained an estimated 450 billion cubic meters of natural gas, environmental activism group Greenpeace said that the find was a good reason not to establish another coal-powered electricity plant in Israel. Natural gas was an excellent, cleaner-burning alternative for electricity production, and now besides being better for the environment, would also help Israel economically, replacing imported coal with Israeli produced natural gas.

The Leviathan find is estimated to be worth about $45 billion at today's market values.
