The Agricultural Ministry will stop renewing licenses to fish in the Kinneret beginning January 1, due to overfishing and a drastic lowering of the fish population in the lake. The ban on license renewal will extend through December 31, 2012. The fishing ban will include the entire Kinneret, all streams leading to the lake, and the area where the Kinneret spills into the Jordan River. Agricultural Ministry workers, meanwhile, will take steps to increase the fish population in the lake.
Most of the loss in fish population, which has been going down for the last decade, occurred in the past two years, Ministry officials said. Staff will be sent out daily to enforce the new rules, officials said.
