A joint Israeli, Jordanian, and PA enviromental group is to receive a prize of 250,000 euros, the first distributed by the Aristotle Onassis Foundation for the Environment, established in 2009. The group, Friends of the Earth Middle East, works mainly on ensuring that the Kinnerert, Jordan River and the Dead Sea remain viable waterways. The group runs various programs to protect the waterways from pollution, recycle water, and prevent water waste.

The prize, one of the largest in the world for environmental activity, will be given out on November 17 in Hamburg, Germany, which is sponsoring it with the Onassis Foundation. Onassis, who was married to Jacqueline Kennedy after the death of her first husband John F. Kennedy, was a Greek shipping magnate whose fleet was based in Hamburg.
