EU Opposes 'Jewish State' Concept

In response to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's proposal that the Western-backed Palestinian Authority recognize Israel as a "Jewish state" in return for a continued ban on Jewish construction in Judea and Samaria, the European Union said that Israel must assure the rights of all Israeli citizens, both Jewish and non-Jewish.

EU High Representative Spokesperson Maja Kocijancic said the EU supports a solution of "two democratic states, side by side, in peace and security," and that these states must ensure full equality for all citizens, implying that Israel defined as a "Jewish state" would somehow hinder the rights of non-Jewish residents or citizens.
