Forum of Seven Won't Relate to Quartet Announcement

The members of the security-diplomatic mini-cabinet decided Sunday night to ignore the declaration that the Quartet of Middle East peace broker nations is set to make on Monday regarding direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA). The statement calls for a one-year limit on the talks and the June 4, 1967 borders as a basis for the talks, as well as continuation of the freeze on Jewish construction in Judea and Samaria.

The Forum of Seven called the Quartet declaration a "fig leaf" behind which the PA can try to delay the talks. Israel intends to wait for an apparently simpler call by the United States to enter into talks to be held in Washington or Cairo.
