First Reading of Expanded Book Loan Program OKd

The Knesset approved the first reading on Monday of a program by Education Minister Gidon Sa'ar to expand the budget for loaning textbooks from 1.9 million shekels to 5.5 million. Under the proposal the minister would be able to grant additional aid to allow schools to refresh their supply of textbooks in addition to the initial budget for joining the program.

The proposal would increase the number of schools taking part in the program, including expansion to high schools. It would also reduce the requirement for parental agreement from 90 percent of a school's population to 60 percent.
