MK Orlev: No Shabbat Soccer Games

Chairman of the Knesset Education, Culture and Sport Committee, MK Zvulun Orlev, said Tuesday that he would work to prevent the Israeli all-star soccer team from playing an upcoming game on Shabbat, saying that moving it to a weekday would be “a supreme example of the coexistence of religious and secular Israelis.” Israel must win the game, set for September 3 against Malta, in order to advance into the Euro 2012 campaign. The game will be hosted by Israel.

The game was scheduled by international soccer organization UEFA, and Orlev said he intends to contact Michel Platini, head of the organization, whom Orlev said is a friend of Israel.
