A witness in Port au Prince told reporters that thousands of bodies could be seen strewn about the streets of the city, in one of the most devastating earthquakes in the Western hemisphere in many years. The witness said that every two story building in the city had collapsed, as had the National Palace. A source in the Haitian government said that the country's president was alive.
Israel is set to decide Wednesday on what aid to provide the devastated country. A UN assessment team is expected to make an initial accounting of the needed aid Wednesday, and Israel will join the international effort to help the victims of the earthquake that struck Tuesday.
