Israel ranked 27th out of 182 countries in the annual Human Development Index, unveiled Monday by the United Nations Development Program. Norway was listed on top, while the United States was ranked 13th and Niger was at the bottom. The figures were gathered in 2007.

Of the factors used to produce the index, Israel ranked tenth in life expectancy at 80.7 years and 34th in literacy with a rate of 97.1 percent in the population above 15 years of age. The per capita gross domestic product of $26,315 was also good for 34th place. School enrollment of 89.9 percent put Israel in the 33rd spot.
