KKL Preparing for Distribution of "Schach"

The Keren Kayemet (Jewish National Fund) has begun preparing for the distribution of wood and palm leaves to be used as "schach," to cover the Sukkot that hundreds of thousands of Israelis will be building throughout the country next week. The organization urges all Israelis to either gather branches for free from its distribution points or to purchase branches only from authorized sources – in order to avoid acquiring branches cut illegally from Israeli nature reserves, a major problem at this time of year.

Two years ago, Chief Rabbis Harav Shlomo Amar Yona Metzger issued a statement declaring that according to Jewish law, using branches illegally cut from national forests was not permitted, and that any sukkah thus covered could not be considered kosher for purposes of carrying out the mitzvah of sitting in the sukkah.
