Benizri Appeals Prison Sentence to High Court

Former Labor Minister Shlomo Benizri will appeal his four-year prison sentence to the Supreme Court on Wednesday, asking for the court to reconsider its decision to increase his punishment from a year and a half. Benizri was convicted of accepting a bribe of 100,000 shekels.

Benizri will claim to the court that its decision to demand a harsher punishment in order to discourage government corruption is unjust. In addition, he will claim that he cannot receive a penalty which would have been considered unlikely at the time he committed the crime.
