The Chief Rabbinate of Israel is considering granting an overall certification of "kosher for Passover" for the Similac baby formula. The rabbinate currently certifies Similac as kosher for those who eat legumes (kitniyot in Hebrew) and consume milk from non-Jewish dairies (chalav nochri).
Rabbi and Member of Knesset Chaim Amsalem turned to the rabbinate because Similac has the internationally-recognized kashrut certification of the Orthodox Union (OU) the rest of the year, but not during Passover because of the legumes, even though the Ashkenazi community is not stringent on baby products regarding legumes.
