An Israeli woman threw out her elderly mother’s old mattress after buying her a new one as a surprise present. The next day she recalled that the old mattress held her life savings inside, close to $1 million in shekels and dollars. "I woke up in the morning screaming, when it hit me what happened," said the woman who asked not to be identified.
The mattress had already been hauled away by garbage collectors by the time she remembered. News of the mistake set off a frantic search through garbage at the city’s landfills on Wednesday. Israeli media reports said that the mattress was found on Wednesday afteroon, torn apart and without the money. The woman said that she began using the mattress for storage after having "traumatic experiences with banks".
