Venezuela, which has become a close ally of Iran, has broken off diplomatic ties with Israel in protest of the Cast Lead counterterrorist campaign. The government of Hugo Chavez last week expelled Israeli envoy Shlomo Cohen.

The Foreign Ministry has not commented. The move leaves Israelis and their relatives in the country without passport services.
