(IsraelNN.com) Iran has issued a fatwa, or religious judicial edict, declaring a ban on the purchase of any item produced in Israel and on the carrying out of any business or trade with Israeli companies.

The fatwa was issued by Iranian Supreme Religious Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has warned Muslims throughout the world not to purchase any product that profits Israel. The decision affects international trade with companies that do business with Israel, as well as Israeli companies themselves. It will also affect companies in which Israeli citizens hold shares, or are employed in high positions or are members of governing boards, regardless of where in the world they are located.

However, a fatwa is generally only obeyed by Muslims that respect the leader who issues the edict.
