The IDF began firing artillery shells at targets in Gaza on Saturday afternoon. Until Saturday afternoon, artillery fire was not a part of the ongoing “Cast Lead” operation in Gaza.

More than 40 Hamas targets were hit over the course of the day, some by artillery and some in aerial attacks. Arab sources in Gaza reported that approximately 20 people were killed in IDF strikes on Friday night and Saturday evening, and two others died of wounds suffered in earlier strikes.
