Emergency Meeting on Water Crisis

Outgoing Prime Minister Ehud Olmert met with Water Authority Director Dr. Uri Shani and with Cabinet ministers Sunday to discuss the water crisis facing Israel. The current dry spell has aggravated worries that a fifth straight winter drought will leave Israelis without safe water for drinking next summer.

Infrastructure Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer (Labor) previously has charged that the Finance Ministry three years go scotched plans for desalinization plants because it appeared that water resources would be saved by additional rains. Olmert ordered the Finance Ministry to report within one week one the shortest possible timetable for building a new plant in Ashdod.
