(IsraelNN.com) Mayor Shimon Lancry of Akko announced on Friday that the city's alternate Israeli Theater Festival would be canceled, in the wake of Arab-Jewish riots that took place in the city during Yom Kippur. The festival was scheduled to start next Wednesday, and all was in place for the start of rehearsals on Friday.

The mayor said, "Due to the feelings of anger and insult among the residents, it seems pointless to go ahead with the festival."

Director-General Moshe Davidovitch of the Galilee Development Authority recommended cancellation of the festival, noting that many Jewish residents of the city claim it is intended to serve the Arab residents and would disrupt the event.

Science, Culture and Sports Minister Ghaleb Majadle had called for the festival to take place, as planned.
