Former Sephardi chief rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu endorsed Jerusalem city councilman Nir Barkat for mayor of the capital on Thursday. Sources in Barkat's office say the rabbi's expression of support came in a discussion with his son, attorney Shlomo Eliyahu, and Rabbi Shmuel Zafrani, the director of the elder Eliyahu's office.
The endorsement is the second boost the Barkat campaign has received this week. Incumbent Uri Lupolianski, who led Barkat in the polls, announced that he is not seeking re-election. Rabbi Meir Porush trails Barkat in the surveys.
