Olmert Turns Optimistic on Final Agreement By 2009

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert breakfasted with American Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice Tuesday morning, and his office announced that both leaders believe a final agreement with the Palestinian Authority (PA) can be reached before American President George W. Bush leaves office in January. Government and PA leaders previously have all but ruled out the chances of a deal because of lingering issues, particularly the status of Jerusalem and the PA demand for the right of millions of foreign Arabs to immigrate to the Jewish state.

The Prime Minister and Secretary Rice also discussed Iran and the captivity of kidnapped IDF soldier Gilad Shalit. She is to meet with Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni in the afternoon and then visit PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas before returning to the United States.
