Israel Museum Acquires Major Photography Collection

Jerusalem's Israel Museum has recently acquired the photography collection of Harriette and Noel Levine, considered one of the world's finest private photography collections, which is comprised of 125 photographs spanning 160 years of photographic history.

The collection, which was built by the Levines over a 30 year period, includes iconic calotypes by British photographers, early American landscape photographs, French master works, signature examples of Pictorialism and early 20th-century works of American and international modernism..

In addition to the gift of the collection, the Israel Museum announced new gifts totaling $2 million in endowment support for the Museum’s photography department—$1 million from the Levines themselves and $1 million from Patricia Gerber, sister of Harriette Levine, in honor of the Levines, adding to the $14 million currently endowed in the Israel Museum's Department of Photography.  The department, which was opened in 1965, houses an encyclopedic collection including over 55,000 works from the earliest days of photography to the present.
