Defense Minister Ehud Barak has told his American counterpart that the pace of economic and financial sanctions against Iran's nuclear development program should be maintained and increased. Barak told Defense Secretary Robert Gates that the uranium enrichment program endangers the region and the rest of the world. He stressed the need to insist on sticking to a policy in which none of the options are taken off the table.
Also on the agenda were Israel's negotiations with Syria, Hizbullah's rearmament and other violations of Security Council resolution 1701, which ended the Second Lebanon war, and the political-security situation in Gaza. Present for part of the meeting was Admiral Michael Mullen, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff. Barak also met with Vice President Dick Cheney.
