Outgoing Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations Dan Gillerman fears that failure of United Nations peacekeepers to carry out their mission in Lebanon is laying the groundwork for a third war between Lebanon and Israel. He harshly criticized United Nations Interim Forces (UNIFIL) for not carrying out the ceasefire resolution that ended the Second Lebanon War.
"The UNIFIL soldiers were not sent there to give out chocolates to children or write traffic tickets. They were sent there to carry out a mandate which was very clearly defined, and they are not," Gillerman told the Post. He said the ceasefire resolution was hailed as a diplomatic victory but actually is a failure, which is what many critics predicted would happen after Prime Minister Ehud Olmert agreed to end the war without fulfilling his promise to free kidnapped IDF soldiers Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev.
