'Champion of Peace' Peres Gives up on PA Leader Abbas

President Shimon Peres, who was an enthusiastic supporter of the failed Oslo agreement and the expulsion of Jews from Gush Katif, has thrown up his hands at the possibility of coming to terms with the present Palestinian Authority (PA). "There is no chance of reaching an agreement between Israel and the PA," he remarked at a dinner hosted by Defense Minister Ehud Barak and attended by the Jordanian ambassador to Israel.

The envoy and a left-leaning attorney were arguing about the chances of two sides making peace with each other when President Peres entered the conversation. He stated that Arabs do not consider PA Chairman Abbas as their legitimate leader and that any agreement signed by him would quickly be torn to shreds after one day.
