Altalena Memorial Boating Event in Tel Aviv

The Menachem Begin Legacy Center and the Israeli Boaters' Union (Tel Aviv Marina) will hold a memorial cruise Friday on the 60th anniversary of the sinking of the Etzel (Irgun) ship Altalena. The event will be accompanied by the slogan "civil war – never."

The memorial ceremony will take place opposite Tel Aviv's Frishman beach, where the Altalena was sunk, and will be attended by former Etzel fighters, dozens of private boats, Sea Scouts and members of the Etgarim youth movement.

The Altalena carried weapons that were intended for use by Etzel and former Etzel fighters within the newly formed IDF. It was sunk on June 22, 1948 on orders by Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion. IDF forces killed 10 of the Etzel fighters after they had jumped ship, unarmed, despite the fact that they flew the white flag.
