Syrians: Too Early for Direct Talks

The transition from Turkish-mediated talks between Syria and Israel to direct talks is not about to happen, a senior Syrian source told Ash-Sharq il-Awsat Friday. The source said direct talks could only take place if the United States becomes involved in the talks, but neither Syria nor the U.S. are interested in this at present.

The source denied that French President Nicolas Sarkozy is pressuring Syria to agree to a meeting between Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad next month. It is too early to talk about this kind of meeting because it could be interpreted as Syrian recognition of Israel, the source said.
