The Cabinet decided to establish a National Fire and Rescue Authority Sunday. The authority will be put in charge of saving lives and property in the event of fires, as well as prevention of fires, rescue of trapped people in emergencies and taking care of public safety hazards involving dangerous substances.

The Fire and Rescue Authority will be headed by a Fire and Rescue Commissioner who will be appointed by the Minister of Interior, for a four year term. It will be an independent inter-governmental agency with a separate budget and will be divided into districts that will correspond to the police's districts.

The current Fire and Rescue Commission will be shut down.
