Defense Minister Ehud Barak issued a warning to Israel's enemies Thursday, saying: "We are seekers of peace but we are strong and ready to kill and be killed in order to protect what we hold dear. Do not try us."

Speaking at the security establishment's annual Independence Day event, before an audience of about 6,000, Barak said that the IDF is strong and getting stronger, trained and ready for any test.

"The best war is one which is avoided," Barak said, "and we know well that proven strength and a qualitative edge are the best guarantee of deterrence and prevention of war." He added: "This is also a necessary basis for any peace agreement."
