MK Benny Elon (NU/NRP) criticized Prime minister Ehud Olmert for injecting a political statement into his Memorial Day speech at Har Herzl Wednesday. "Peace and not war is our aim," Olmert said, and "our diplomatic actions and our willingness to compromise are the fallen soldiers' order."

MK Elon told Arutz Sheva he felt anger at Olmert's statement. "Olmert continues to play the calculated political game cynically" knowing that the subject of the investigation against him will not be mentioned because of the ceremonial nature of the day, Elon said.

Elon also attacked the leftist press which he said called for an end to the investigations against Olmert in order to allow him to continue to give up parts of the Land of Israel. "They are using the name of peace in vain, they are talking about concessions which lead to the spilling of blood," he said. Elon compared the media's behavior to that of the people on board the Titanic who continued playing until the last moment. "There is something so cynical here that it is frightening," he added.
