Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has offered dissident Pensioners Party Knesset Member Elhanan Glazer the post of deputy minister in order to keep him from breaking away from the coalition. Pensioners Party MK Moshe Sharoni led a three-man split from the party on Monday, leaving the coalition with only 64 MKs, three more than a majority in the Knesset. MK Glazer apparently has accepted the Prime Minister's offer.
The splinter faction now includes only MKs Sharoni and Sarah Marom-Shalev, although she also has second thoughts about the breakaway. The switch in Glazer's position leaves the dissidents without enough members to receive proportionate party funds. MK Sharoni had planned to name is new faction Justice for Pensioners with the support of billionaire Arcadi Gaydamak.
