United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has been more favorable towards Israel than his predecessor Kofi Anan, according to the leftist American newspaper The Forward. It quoted Vivien Weissman Howard, head of the American Jewish Congress (AJC) United Nations task force, "He has a far more balanced approach to the Israeli-Palestinian issue. He has set a tone that is appropriate for his office."
Anan was noted for his constant chiding of Israel while backing Arabs, and he often equated terrorism with Israeli counterterrorist operations. Ban has balanced criticism of Israel with condemnations of terrorist attacks by Hamas and the Palestinian Authority.
