Environmental groups are promoting one hour of "lights out" in Tel Aviv Thursday night to demonstrate the need to save energy. Another 19 cities around the world are staging similar actions.

Electricity demand in Israel increases four percent a year while capacity is almost at a standstill. Environmentalists suggest that more electricity could be saved if schools and offices would close down their computers at night and use energy savings light bulbs. However, Israel Electric Corp. workers still retain the privilege of free electricity in their houses with a limit of not surpassing double the national average electric bill.
