Members of the community of Shavei Shomeron wrote Minister Ami Ayalon (Labor) a letter demanding that he cancel his planned visit to the Samarian community Sunday. Ayalon is reportedly planning to hold a parlor meeting in the community to present a legislative initiative offering compensation for Jewish residents of Yesha who agree to leave their homes. A report in the left-wing Haaretz daily was not clear in whether the letter was sent by the community's secretariat or by a group with unofficial status.
Ayalon said he had no intention of cancelling his visit, however.
"We ask you and call upon you to cancel your provocative visit," the letter stated. "The community is united and resolute in its intention to continue to grow after hallucinatory ideas like these… disappear and are forgotten." It goes on to say: "The residents are angered by your visit and will do all they can to prevent the initiative for destruction of the community… Prevent unnecessary civil strife in our community. You are not wanted here."
