Kolech Takes Aim at Mehadrin Bus Lines

Rachel Keren, chairwoman of the women's group "Kolech" sent a letter to Knesset Members this week asking them to put an end to the Mehadrin intercity bus lines that serve the hareidi sector.

Keren called the separated-gender buses "an apartheid" and claimed the placement of women at the back half of the bus was "an extreme act of discrimination, oppression and humiliation claiming to be glatt kosher."

She called on Knesset members in her letter to use "all means at [your] disposal to stop the process while it is still in its beginning." The High Court of Justice criticized the kosher bus lines in January but suggested that one solution to the friction generated might be to clearly mark the buses as "kosher" in order to warn potential riders that dress codes and gender separation standards apply.
