Following a series of attacks on firefighters attempting to perform their duties, Interior Ministry Director-General Aryeh Bar and Israel Fire and Rescue Commissioner Shimon Romach decided Sunday that firefighters who are physically attacked while on their way to put out a fire will be allowed to leave. At least five attacks violent attacks on firefighters took place last year, Romach said, and in some cases the firefighters were pelted with heavy stones. In two cases, firefighters were later hospitalized for their injuries.
Most of the attacks took place in Arab neighborhoods. The most recent attack took place two weeks ago in the Wadi Nisnas neighborhood of Haifa. The attacks frustrate rescue workers, “who provide service to every community, regardless of religion, race, or sex,” Romach said. Some firefighters have already expressed apprehension about responding to calls in certain areas, he said. Allowing the firefighters to protect themselves by leaving in case of attack will ensure that firefighters feel confident in responding to all calls, he said.
