Canada has announced it will not participate in next year's United Nations conference on racism because it likely will focus on "regrettable anti-Semitism," Foreign Minister Maxime Bernier said. The same panel met in 2001, when Israel and the United States walked out of the conference because of a draft condemning Israel as a racist and apartheid country, allegations which later were deleted.
"(We) had hoped that the preparatory process for the 2009 ... conference would remedy the mistakes of the past," Foreign Minister Bernier said." Despite our efforts, we have concluded that it will not. Canada will therefore not participate."
American Jewish organizations applauded the Canadian move.
